Discover Primary Science Award 1

26th Apr 2018

The boys and girls in Room 10 have been busy scientists the last few weeks. We are applying for the Discover Primary Science Certificate.

Experiment 1: How to plants drink water?

Equipment:

  • a jar of water
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • red food dye
  • pipette

Activity:

  1. We discussed how humans and animals drink water.
  2. Using our knowledge of plants, we predicted how plants might drink water.
  3. Using a pipette we dropped 4 drops of red food dye into the jar of water.
  4. We placed the stalk of celery into the jar of red water.
  5. We left our experiment on the windowsill for 24 hours.

Results:

  • When we cut the celery we could see the tubes had been dyed red.

Conclusions:

Plants drink water by sucking it up - like a straw!
