SVDP Virtual Sports Day 2020!

How to prepare for our Virtual Sports Day!

The first thing you need to do is plan your sports day by printing out and filling in the Sports Day Planner. You can find the Blank Family Planner in the downloads section at:

https://sites.google.com/holyangelsns.ie/virtualsportsday/downloads?authuser=0

Print your blank timetable out (or design your own!) and decide with your family what order you want to do the events in, what time you want to start them at and which activities you want to do (see more about the activities below).

The second thing you need to do is get your equipment ready for the day. Don’t worry if you don’t have some of the equipment necessary for the activities, we have made out a list of household alternatives below that can be used instead.

The third thing you need to do is get some music playing to add to the atmosphere and fun for your day! If you would like a ready-made Spotify playlist for your home sports day, click here:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7t02bxdFRuJHD8xSGyF8tD?si=FHOcL62uRS6JQw8I_By1lg

Once you have prepared these three things- you are ready to go! Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes, runners and have plenty of water ready!

How to take part in the Virtual Sports Day:

There are six events for our Virtual Sports Day.

Running

Kicking

Throwing

Balancing

Landing

Traditional Sports Day

You will find the events at this link:

https://sites.google.com/holyangelsns.ie/virtualsportsday/the-activities?authuser=0

For each event there is a skill explanation followed by three activities. Activity 1 is generally aimed at the lower school (Junior Infants to 1st class), Activity 2 is aimed at the Middle school (2nd class to 4th class) and Activity 3 is aimed at the upper school (5th and 6th class). These are guidelines only; the children can choose what they would like to do. Feel free to try all the activities if you like.

To explain how to do each activity there is a quick description of the activity on the left hand side, a sketch and a video clip demonstrating the task.

At the bottom of the page you will see the STEP model (Space, Task, Equipment, People), which will provide ideas for how to adapt the task in order to increase or decrease the difficulty to suit your child’s preferences and ability.

In the Traditional Sports Day section there are four activities:

Egg and spoon race

Sack race

Open-air Twister

Playground Game- Queenie-O

There are no difficulty levels with these tasks. It follows the same structure as the previous events; there is a description of the task, a sketch and a video clip.

Dancing lesson with our Superstar Past Pupil!

One of our incredibly talented past pupils has very generously shared this amazing dance video with us for our Active Home Week.

Have a go warming up your body, stretching and trying a really cool dance trick with her!

She started dancing when she was just five and a half years old. She goes to the Naomi Hamilton Dance School in Clontarf. Pre Covid19 she would train four times a week in 3 hour classes. She also does ballet with Miss Niamh Fitzpatrick ballet school on Tuesdays. She competes in Ireland and the UK and was due to compete in Spain at a weekend competition in May, which unfortunately has been cancelled. This girl is so passionate about dance and she has to sacrifice playdates and lots of birthday parties in order to prioritise training. She dances freestyle disco dance and contemporary. She also does lyrical dance classes for 3 hours on Saturdays. She dances a total of 6 hours every Saturday- now that is dedication for you! She trains with Leah in Live, Love, Learn Lyrical School in Kilbarrack. During Covid19 she has had a lot of opportunities to train with famous international dance choreographers and teachers. She dances online every day, at least 2 classes and up to 4 classes a day. However, she cannot wait to get back to her dance school.

At the end of the video you can watch her perform a beautiful dance routine. This dance is from a class she did a few days ago with a famous dancer called Sacha who was on 'The Greatest Dancer' on Channel 4 last year and who currently dances in the West End in 'Cats' the musical.

This girl's dream is to become a professional dancer and to open her own dance school.

We have no doubt that she will be a very famous dancer in a few years’ time! We can see that she has a very bright future ahead of her and wish her the best of luck with her dancing career.

Active HOME Week 2020

Active Home Week

‘Keeping active while staying at home’

June 8th – 12th 2020

National ‘Active SCHOOL Week’ takes place every year and is a really enjoyable part of the school year for many children. This year, because of COVID-19, it is not possible for this to go ahead so we are inviting the families of our school to participate in the ‘Active HOME Week‘ challenge instead. Our Active Home Week will take place next week from Monday 8th to Friday 12th June.

The aim of the Active Home initiative is to motivate young people to keep active at home by trying out NEW activities, taking on CHALLENGES and having FUN with family activities. To complete the challenge, the children need to find four different ways of being active every day, making sure that this adds up to 60 minutes, or more, of physical activity. All members of the family are encouraged, #Together, to take on the challenge.

We would love you to share all your photos and videos with us from Active home week next week. Please email us any photos and videos to svdpinfs@gmail.com. Please label your photos/ videos ‘Active Home Week’ with your child’s room number.

Our ‘Active HOME Week’ challenge will finish with our Virtual Sports Day on Friday 12th June. We have picked this day to finish off our Active Home Week but we completely understand that lots of parents are working and have other commitments so may not be able to participate on this day. The activities for sports day (and all the activities for Active Home Week) can be completed on any day that suits or can be divided up over a number of days. There is no set schedule for our Active Home Week, we are simply giving a suggested weekly schedule and providing a variety of activities to choose from to get your children active. We will be using the resources from the Sligo Education Centre website for our sports day. If you would like to check it out in advance visit: https://sites.google.com/holyangelsns.ie/virtualsportsday/home

The Irish Heart Foundation have created a resource for Active Home Week. We have used it to plan some activities for you this week. You might like to check out the document if you are looking for more activities. https://irishheart.ie/publications/lets-get-active-week-5/

Check out our Active Home schedule below for lots of ideas, videos and websites to try to get the whole family active for at least 60 minutes each day. Please feel free to pick and choose which activities you would like to try. You do not need to complete every activity, they are suggestions and ideas only. Remember you do not have to stick to the days suggested below, you can try the activities whenever suits your family. Enjoy!

General facilitator rules apply.

Facilitators are suitably qualified and experienced in their field.

All activities are for educational purposes. The school is not affiliated with any organisation and is merely offering suggestions.

Please choose and alter activities at your discretion accounting for your child or children’s abilities, ages and needs.

Parental supervision is required.
